Decoding the future of edge computing in smart manufacturing: an industry 5.0 perspective
摘要
Industries invariably implement innovations to respond promptly to changing human and societal needs. It stimulates the business structures to adapt to evolving market conditions, ensuring competitiveness and enhancing the economy. Therein, the various computing platforms complement these progressions in manufacturing, leveraging real-time responses, improving privacy and reliability, and reducing network burden. Recently, edge computing (EC)-enabled manufacturing has attained myriad applications and benefits. Therefore, this study employs bibliometric analysis to investigate the published literature (440 documents) on EC-enabled manufacturing. It comprehensively analyzes and acquires main insights regarding: (i) prominent papers and journals, (ii) influential authors, institutions, funding agencies, subject areas, and countries, (iii) relative terminologies, benefits, and applications of EC, (iv) evolution of research focus, (v) key themes and topics, and (vi) EC with emerging technologies. Using cluster analysis and keyword overlays, it identifies dominant themes and highlights critical applications, benefits, and emerging computing terminologies in the industry. Besides, future research directions employ the EC to achieve smart manufacturing goals of Industry 5.0, such as sustainable practices, green computing, mass customization and personalization, and the industrial metaverse.
