Energy efficiency and consumption in drilling: a review

Despite extensive research on machining processes in recent decades from a manufacturing sustainability perspective, some processes receive less attention compared to others. Drilling is one such example, which contrasts with its high importance and utilization in the discrete manufacturing sector. In this work, a systematic review on Energy Efficiency and Consumption (EEC) of mechanical drilling was carried out. The review was planned based on four Research Questions (RQs). The first one is concerned with the relevance of research on drilling when compared to other machining processes. The second one questioned the impact of machine tool selection on drilling energy consumption. The third RQ reviewed the impact of cutting conditions, drilling strategy, and tool parameters on EEC. The fourth RQ was delineated and aimed to review how the use of cutting fluids impacts EEC. From the sample of papers reviewed in this work it was concluded that only a small fraction of it (approximately 7.5%) focused on drilling, when compared to milling, turning and other machining processes. However, concerning the other three RQs it was concluded that they remain open, which demands further investigation. These gaps come partially from an absence of a standardized framework to address the influence of process parameters on EEC and more holistic base analysis of alternative processes able to manufacture products demanding holes.
