Research on fine blanking strengthening patterns based on 42CrMo steel

Fine blanking is a plastic-forming process. This study reports empirical findings on the edge-strengthening patterns of 42CrMo steel parts produced by fine blanking. Along a grid array of test positions on the fine-blanked edge, we examined the strengthening effects on materials with varying initial strengths. Microstructure images and hardness test results reveal a distinct spatial pattern of strengthening: the hardening effect is most significant on the burr side near the blanked edge and weakens toward the die roll side as well as deeper from the blanked edge. The magnitude of the strengthening effect is influenced by the initial hardness of the steel, with a more pronounced increase in microhardness observed in materials with lower initial hardness. Meanwhile, the initial hardness of the material has minimal influence on the size deviation of the parts, with dimensional precision remaining consistently high across all strength levels. This research provides insights into the mechanisms of fine-blank-induced strengthening and offers guidance to improve quality and efficiency in manufacturing processes.
