<p>The carbon emission trading policy (<i>CETP</i>) effectively addresses the negative externalities associated with industrial enterprises. However, its spatial spillover effects and mediation paths affecting green innovation efficiency (<i>GIE</i>) of these enterprises have not been explored. Utilizing data from above-scale industrial enterprises across Chinese provinces from 2009 to 2022, we measure their <i>GIE</i> using the Slack-based Measure (<i>SBM</i>) model and investigate the impact of <i>CETP</i> on <i>GIE</i> through difference-in-differences (<i>DID</i>), spatial <i>DID</i>, and mediation effect models. Our findings indicate that <i>CETP</i> enhances <i>GIE</i> of industrial enterprises, exhibiting a direct effect of 0.049% and a spatial spillover effect of 0.069%. Its spatial spillover effect significantly surpasses the direct effect. Our study further reveals that research and development (<i>R&amp;D</i>) investment and high energy consumption structures serve as mediation paths through which <i>CETP</i> influences <i>GIE</i> of industrial enterprises. This research underscores the importance of strengthening policy demonstration and regional diffusion, enabling more regions to benefit from <i>CETP</i>, thereby providing a clear direction for policy implementation.</p>
