摘要

Background

Subtalar arthrodesis is an efficient and well-established treatment option. In recent years arthroscopic techniques have gained more and more importance. Because of their soft tissue sparing nature they have the potential to minimize risks and optimize the outcome.

Aim of the paper

This article gives a short overview of the different techniques of arthroscopic subtalar arthrodesis, surgical anatomy and surgical techniques. The results in the literature are discussed.

Discussion

Arthroscopic subtalar arthrodesis is a safe surgical technique. It is technically demanding and provides high fusion rates together with few soft tissue complications and a faster rehabilitation than the open approach. Substantial malalignment and osseous defects are contraindications for arthroscopic subtalar fusion. In the mid-term to long-term there is no clear superiority over the open surgical approach, whilst there is hardly any high-level evidence.
