Background <p>Osteoarthritis of the ankle joint is predominantly posttraumatic and therefore often associated with deformities. Despite advances in endoprosthetic treatment, joint-preserving procedures should be used whenever possible, especially as younger patients are mostly affected.</p> Aim of the study <p>To provide an overview of the current joint-preserving treatment options, in particular corrective osteotomies.</p> Material and methods <p>Literature review and in-house algorithm.</p> Results <p>The ankle joint shows a&#xa0;high tendency to recover. When applied correctly, periarticular and intra-articular osteotomies of the ankle joint are effective in reducing pain and delaying the progression of osteoarthritis. In many cases a&#xa0;reduction of the severity of osteoarthritis can be observed. This is particularly true for valgus osteoarthritis.</p> Discussion and conclusion <p>Good mobility with a&#xa0;good condition of the periarticular soft tissues and biomechanically optimal joint balance are crucial for the treatment success. This applies not only to the frontal plane but also to the sagittal plane. This also creates ideal conditions for subsequent joint replacement if the osteoarthritis progresses and requires further treatment.</p>

Background

Results

The ankle joint shows a high tendency to recover. When applied correctly, periarticular and intra-articular osteotomies of the ankle joint are effective in reducing pain and delaying the progression of osteoarthritis. Discussion and conclusion

Good mobility with a good condition of the periarticular soft tissues and biomechanically optimal joint balance are crucial for the treatment success. This applies not only to the frontal plane but also to the sagittal plane. This also creates ideal conditions for subsequent joint replacement if the osteoarthritis progresses and requires further treatment.
