The treatment of cartilage defects in the knee joint due to degenerative conditions and focal early osteoarthritis is continuously evolving and is becoming increasingly more individualized, technologically advanced and evidence based. Advances in regenerative medicine and biomechanical correction procedures expand the therapeutic spectrum and improve clinical outcomes. This article provides a structured overview of the wide range of available treatment options and the essential diagnostic evaluation, in order to enable well-informed and patient-specific treatment decisions.
