摘要

Colposcopy is of outstanding importance in the clarification of abnormal screening findings (cytology, human papillomavirus [HPV] test) that are collected as part of cervical cancer screening. In the organized cancer screening guidelines, which have been in force in Germany since January 01, 2020, a clarification algorithm is used to regulate when “clarification colposcopy” is indicated. The quality assurance agreement of the German National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians regulates the requirements for performing a clarification colposcopy. Colposcopy findings are evaluated in accordance with the Rio classification of the International Federation for Cancer Prevention and Colposcopy (IFCPC) of 2011. Clarification colposcopy with biopsy and/or endocervical curettage (ECC) can avoid unnecessary excisional treatments. An inconspicuous colposcopy finding is associated with a very low risk of developing higher-grade dysplasia of the cervix.
