摘要

Despite existing legal regulations for outpatient and inpatient care in Germany, peripartal and perinatal risks for mother and child cannot be reliably triaged in every situation. Whether a birth was ‘low risk’ can only ever be determined retrospectively. Therefore, births that take place outside of centers with maximum care capacities for mother and child—although legally permitted and safeguarded by the legal right to freely choose the place of birth—are always associated with increased risks of morbidity and mortality. All parties involved—expectant parents, healthcare professionals, insurers, and policymakers—must be aware of this, and expectant parents must be given thorough information about these risks.
