<p>Follow-up care after curative treatment for breast cancer has remained largely unchanged for decades. Routine screening for asymptomatic distant metastases is not recommended, meaning such relapses are often detected incidentally or after patients experience symptoms, leading to palliative intent treatment. In light of modern diagnostic and therapeutic options, this approach appears outdated. Liquid biopsy, especially the detection of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), offers a&#xa0;promising method to identify minimal residual disease (MRD) early, before clinical or radiological signs for (distant) recurrence appear. This could enable earlier intervention with effective therapies. However, prospective studies to support a&#xa0;change in follow-up care are still lacking. The currently recruiting Standard Surveillance versus Intensive Surveillance in Early Breast Cancer (SURVIVE) study aims to close this gap.</p>
