摘要

Cesarean section is a common surgical procedure that is primarily performed when a vaginal birth is high risk or impossible. One of the biggest challenges with cesarean sections is an impacted fetal head (IFH), where the fetal head is fixed deep in the pelvis and is difficult to mobilize. This occurs in up to 16% of unplanned cesarean sections and can result in serious complications for the mother and newborn. Risk factors include a prolonged second stage of labor, anomalous fetal positions and unsuccessful attempts of vaginal deliveries. Fetal and maternal complications such as fetal hypoxia, traumatic head injuries, maternal lacerations with significant blood loss and infections can result. Good preparation, clear instructions and a repertoire of targeted maneuvers should be mastered by the obstetrician in order to avoid serious consequences.
