摘要

Background

The negative effects of climate change on women’s health are worsening. At the same time, climate protection offers great potential for the promotion of women’s health.

Objective

Presentation of climate-sensitive health counseling (CSHC) and use in the gynecological setting.

Materials and methods

Based on the concept of CSHC, this article shows why and how topics relating to climate change and its health consequences can be integrated into everyday gynecological practice and patient counseling. The aim is to protect and promote both individual and public (women’s) health, taking into account climate and health-related aspects.

Results

The content of CSHC in gynecological consultations may involve information on the effects of climate change on women’s health, protective measures, education on healthy and climate-friendly lifestyles and, in rarer cases, social issues. Possible occasions for CSHC could be guidance on heat risks (e.g., increased risk of premature birth) in the context of maternity care and advice on the benefits of plant-based nutrition for both health and the climate (co-benefits) in cancer follow-up care or endometriosis. When applying CSHC in gynecological consultations, established strategies from both health and climate change communication are used, such as motivational interviewing and narrative conversations as well as openly addressing climate-related feelings.

Conclusion

The integration of CSHC into gynecological routine consultation offers a practical opportunity to contribute to the preservation of natural resources in addition to individual health promotion. For the widespread application of CSHC in gynecology, there is a need for further training, integration into professional guidelines, funding opportunities, and evidence on the most effective communication strategies in routine gynecological care.
