摘要

Social media and generative AI chatbots offer children and adolescents opportunities for identity development, social connection, participation, learning and low-threshold support services; however, they also pose substantial risks to mental health and development. Clinically, it is not screentime per se that matters but more the quality, context and nature of use including exposure to risks. This article outlines current regulatory frameworks, describes opportunities and identifies direct risks using the CO:RE 4C model, expanded to include new AI-related threats and indirect risks arising from the displacement of developmentally beneficial activities as well as disturbances to social interactions and cognitive resources. Practical recommendations for pediatric care are derived.
