摘要

Worldwide 1 in every 5–6 children is overweight and according to the data from the study on health of children and adolescents in Germany (KiGGS) the prevalence of obesity among adolescents in Germany is just under 6%. In adolescents with obesity the risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) increases enormously to an overall prevalence of > 30%. MASLD is the most frequent chronic liver disease and the second most common indication for liver transplantation in North America after metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH)-associated decompensated liver failure. With this review of the current data on MASLD and the development of the new nomenclature, we aim to raise awareness of the significance of this disease, summarize current German language and international recommendations and present the latest developments in the diagnostics and treatment options.
