摘要

The number of reported cases of physical violence against children and adolescents in Germany amounts to approximately 15,000 per year, the actual number is likely to be several times higher. Raising awareness of the public health system for the need to recognize signs as well as to differentiate between accidents and physical violence as the cause of injuries is important in order to filter out more cases as the consequences of physical violence in childhood can also have a significant impact on adulthood. Physical violence against children usually occurs in connection with a variety of stressful and overwhelming situations, often originating from one parent. Infants and toddlers up to 3 years of age are particularly affected. In order to recognize signs of physical violence, it is essential to consider family circumstances and risk factors in addition to an attentive physical examination. The most frequently affected organ system is the skin with hematomas or thermal injuries in locations that are unusual for children. Bone fractures can also be the result of physical violence and in immobile infants they are highly suspicious of physical violence. A team experienced in child protection is suitable for the best possible distinction between accident-related and inflicted injuries, which works according to appropriate algorithms and guidelines, as done for example by child protection groups at clinics. In cases of violence against children, a help concept for families should be developed in the interests of the children that prevents a repetition of violence against children as best as possible.
