Risikoprädiktion und Prävention von Nahrungsmittelallergien bei Kindern: eine qualitative Studie zur Elternperspektive
摘要
In the last decades there has been a paradigm shift in allergy prevention, away from avoidance and towards tolerance induction. Thus, parents are confronted with a broad range of sometimes contradictory information.
ObjectiveAs part of the NAMIBIO app consortium, our aim was to systematically identify and describe parental information needs and information seeking behavior regarding the prediction and prevention of food allergies in children (FAIC). In addition, our aim was to understand parents’ attitudes towards a health app for the early prediction and prevention of FAIC.
MethodsIn our qualitative study 30 guided interviews were conducted with parents of children (0–3 years) diagnosed with food allergies (FA), at risk of FA or not known to be at risk. We analyzed the data based on qualitative content analysis according to Kuckartz.
ResultsQualitative content analysis revealed five main categories with inductive subcategories. Our study showed varying parental awareness and varying information needs. Some reported no need for information, while others expressed a strong interest in preventive measures. Parents sought information partly based on a gut feeling and partly based on signs or symptoms and expressed a need for more competence in seeking information. Sources of information included healthcare professionals and other parents. A potential app should be trustworthy and data efficient.
ConclusionOur results emphasize the need to raise awareness for FA prevention and support parents in prevention efforts. Parents who sought information on allergy prevention had clear expectations for digital applications and were open to their use.
