Background <p>Artificial intelligence (AI) can improve the diagnosis and treatment of fractures in childhood and adolescence. Based on a&#xa0;needs analysis from the patients’ and physicianʼs perspectives, the current status and potential of AI applications in this area of pediatrics are presented.</p> Material and method <p>Examples from research and development as well as approved medical products for the application of AI in pediatric traumatology are featured based on a&#xa0;PubMed literature search and individual research projects and are placed in the context of the development and use of AI.</p> Results <p>There is a&#xa0;rapid development in the support of X‑ray diagnostics and sonography through AI systems. New developments for clinical decision support systems lead to new AI-specific questions regarding traceability, explainability, transparency and trustworthiness. In addition to weighing up the benefits and risks, open fields of action are identified.</p> Discussion <p>Pediatric traumatology is a&#xa0;very useful and meaningful area of application for AI in medicine. With respect to the shortage of specialist personnel and the need to ensure treatment quality on a&#xa0;broad scale, added value can be expected. Nevertheless, further qualitatively comprehensible child-specific development activities are required for this very heterogeneous age group.</p> <p>Medical users should inform themselves about the limits and possibilities of the respective AI solution and its quality in order to enable an informed and conscious use for their patients.</p>

Background

Artificial intelligence (AI) can improve the diagnosis and treatment of fractures in childhood and adolescence. Based on a needs analysis from the patients’ and physicianʼs perspectives, the current status and potential of AI applications in this area of pediatrics are presented.

Material and method

Examples from research and development as well as approved medical products for the application of AI in pediatric traumatology are featured based on a PubMed literature search and individual research projects and are placed in the context of the development and use of AI.

Results

There is a rapid development in the support of X‑ray diagnostics and sonography through AI systems.
