<p>Obesity in children and adolescents is a&#xa0;significant global public health issue. As the prevalence continues to rise worldwide, effective, long-term treatment strategies are urgently needed for children and adolescents with obesity. A&#xa0;multimodal health behavior and lifestyle treatment (HBLT) is the recommended first-line treatment. A&#xa0;new generation of recently approved anti-obesity medications (AMs) offers the potential to bridge the gap between the only limited effects of HBLT alone on body mass index (BMI) and the invasive but very effective metabolic and bariatric surgery for adolescents with obesity aged 12&#xa0;years and older.</p><p>The medications glucagon-like peptide‑1 receptor analogues (GLP1-RA) liraglutide and semaglutide are approved in Germany and Austria and have shown clinically significant effectiveness, accompanied by mostly mild to moderate adverse effects. Nevertheless, there is a&#xa0;lack of studies regarding their long-term efficacy and safety. Incorporating AMs into national healthcare systems should be part of a&#xa0;holistic patient-centered approach. This article reviews the most recent advances in AMs, their role in the treatment of pediatric obesity and highlights critical areas for further research.</p>
