摘要

Introduction

Sexual violence in childhood and adolescence can have a wide-ranging impact. The health consequences have been well researched, and the potential social consequences are also widely known. When dealing with their own parenting, victims/survivors are confronted with specific problems in addition to the issues and questions that can be challenging for all parents. A research project explored what it means to have children and take on parental responsibility after experiencing sexual violence in childhood, focusing on the subjective perspective of those affected.

Methods

In a mixed methods study (August 2022 to October 2024), adults with and without children who had experienced sexual violence in childhood and adolescence were surveyed using questionnaires and problem-centred interviews. In total, 619 questionnaires were evaluated descriptively; 12 interviews and open-ended responses from the questionnaires were analysed using qualitative content analysis.

Results

For 36% of respondents, the decision for or against parenthood was related to their own experiences. The topics of stress and fears were central, but positive experiences were also reported. Further results relate to romantic relationships and sexuality as well as pregnancy and childbirth, physical and emotional closeness to children, and sex education for children.

Discussion

The experiences of sexual violence are strongly linked to questions of parenthood and can affect parental skills. On this basis, recommendations are developed for counselling, pregnancy support and obstetrics. Specific services are needed that address affected parents without stigmatisation.
