Categorizing Mizo Folk Songs Using Acoustic Source Features

This study delves into the acoustic attributes of folk songs originating from Mizoram, a northeastern state in India. It deals with the analysis of six different song categories, employing various acoustic parameters such as fundamental frequency (F0), strength of excitation (SoE), signal energy (E), and their validation through spectrograms. To discern unique song features, the impulse sequence of excitation sources is isolated using zero frequency filtering (ZFF) and juxtaposed with autocorrelation function (ACF) outcomes. Additionally, a comparative study between SoE and E is conducted to analyze the strength of the impulse sequences and the overall signal energy. The investigation also includes an analysis of specific areas within expressive chanting songs that indicate the presence of aperiodicity. Preliminary classification is performed on the extracted excitation source features using four supervised models, of which the highest accuracy obtained is 85.41% for Support Vector Machines (SVMs). The results and observations yield valuable insights into the acoustic traits exhibited by Mizo folk songs, paving way for more in-depth studies into the possible existence of aperiodicity in some categories of Mizo folk songs.
