摘要

The word dissipation is of frequent usage in the vocabulary of continuum thermodynamics. In this paper, we try to make its meaning precise, both in general and in the context of the descriptions of specific classes of processes. We also consider a number of dissipation-related issues, such as the roles of internal energy, entropy, and free energy in the assessment of dissipation.
