Rib Network Topology: Geometric Analysis of Gothic Ribbed Vaults
摘要
The Gothic period introduced major innovations in architectural design, notably the ribbed vault, where diagonal ribs transformed the traditional groin vault into a new structural system. Over time, ribbed vaults became increasingly complex, offering diverse formal and structural solutions. However, the geometric rules and underlying principles of their design have not been fully systematized. This study addresses that gap by analyzing historical examples with graphical methods to detect consistent rib generation principles reflecting singularities, symmetry, and subdivisions. Rib networks are categorized and compared, revealing recurrent topological patterns. This framework clarifies both the geometric logic and connects Gothic vaults by shared design rules. These insights open new opportunities to reinterpret ribbed vaults using generative tools, advancing heritage conservation and contemporary design.
