<p>Heavy lepton singlets <i>N</i> slightly mixed with a standard neutrino <i>ν</i><sub><i>ℓ</i></sub> are usually searched for at the LHC in the trilepton plus <InlineEquation ID="IEq1"> <InlineMediaObject> <ImageObject Color="BlackWhite" FileRef="13130_2025_26445_Article_IEq1.gif" Format="GIF" Height="21" Rendition="HTML" Resolution="72" Type="Linedraw" Width="33" /> </InlineMediaObject> <EquationSource Format="MATHML"><math display="inline"> <msubsup> <mi>p</mi> <mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi> <mtext>miss</mtext> </msubsup> </math></EquationSource> <EquationSource Format="TEX">\( {p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{miss}} \)</EquationSource> </InlineEquation> channel: <i>pp</i> → <i>W</i> <sup>+</sup> <i>→ ℓ</i><sup>+</sup><i>N</i> with <i>N</i> → <i>ℓ</i><sup>−</sup><i>W</i> <sup>+</sup> → <i>ℓ</i><sup>−</sup><i>ℓ′</i><sup>+</sup><i>ν</i>. We show that, although the longitudinal momentum of the final <i>ν</i> escapes detection, the mass of the heavy lepton can be reconstructed. While this possibility has not been considered in recent LHC searches, we find that the search for a mass peak could improve the current collider bounds on the mixing |<i>V</i><sub><i>ℓN</i></sub>|<sup>2</sup> for any mass <i>m</i><sub><i>N</i></sub> ≥ <i>M</i><sub><i>W</i></sub>.</p>

Reconstructing a Heavy Neutral Lepton at the LHC

Heavy lepton singlets N slightly mixed with a standard neutrino ν are usually searched for at the LHC in the trilepton plus p T miss \( {p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{miss}} \) channel: ppW + → ℓ+N with NW +ℓ′+ν. We show that, although the longitudinal momentum of the final ν escapes detection, the mass of the heavy lepton can be reconstructed. While this possibility has not been considered in recent LHC searches, we find that the search for a mass peak could improve the current collider bounds on the mixing |VℓN|2 for any mass mNMW.
